Carolyn Bertozzi

Carolyn Bertozzi Biography

Carolyn Bertozzi is a professor of Chemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, Director of the Molecular Foundry at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. She received an A.B. degree in chemistry from Harvard and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. Her postdoctoral work was done in cellular immunology at UCSF.

The focus of Bertozzi’s research is to understand glycosylation – the normal process by which sugars are added to proteins or lipids. Changes in glycosylation can be associated with illness or infection. Bertozzi’s group has developed chemical tools that allow changes in cell surface sugars to be followed in live animals.

Dr. Bertozzi has won numerous honors and awards including several for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
