Proteins are complex structures folded from a linear strand of amino acids. These structures are involved in almost every process in the cell. In this iBiology talk, Susan Lindquist discusses the incredible diversity of protein structures, the importance of proper protein folding, and the problems that arise when proteins are misfolded.
|About the Speaker|
Susan Lindquist is a member and former Director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. She is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Professor of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work on yeast prions and protein chaperones established the molecular basis for protein-based mechanisms of inheritance. More recently she has built tractable genetic models of complex protein misfolding diseases, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer's and Huntington’s diseases. Dr. Lindquist is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the Royal Society. She received the 2009 National Medal of Science for her many scientific achievements.
