As well as being a skilled artisan, Peter Walter is Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. His lab studies how cells regulate the quantity of their organelles and how proteins localize to the right place within a cell. Walter is also a long-time co-author of “The Molecular Biology of the Cell”, one of the most widely used textbooks in the field. In 2014, Walter was awarded the Shaw Prize and the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for his research.
