iBiology and iBiology Courses are part of the Science Communication Lab (SCL). Our mission remains the same, to connect people to science. However, our focus has shifted to producing and evaluating cinematic films for education and the public, which you can find on the Science Communication Lab website. For more information about this transition, please see this blog post.
History
From its founding in 2006, iBiology set out to share the excitement of modern biology and the process of scientific discovery through free, open-access videos. The project aimed to introduce viewers to leading scientists in the field—offering insight into how they approached research questions, designed experiments, and thought about science, while also revealing their personalities and perspectives.
iBiology played a pioneering role in innovating professional development for graduate students and postdocs, creating courses focused on experimental planning, research design, and science communication. It also supported educators by offering materials that brought the process and practice of science into the classroom, including a bold initiative to reimagine the introductory biology textbook.
Over time, iBiology expanded its efforts to reach the general public, producing content that celebrated scientific discovery, challenged traditional ideas about who becomes a scientist, and made complex breakthroughs more understandable. This work was made possible by the generosity of countless biologists committed to making science accessible and inspiring to a global audience.
