00:00:16.01 In science, we give a lot of talks.
00:00:18.15 We spend a lot of time presenting in lab meetings, in journal clubs.
00:00:23.24 We give seminars, we give lectures, we give job talks.
00:00:27.15 So, we're spending a lot of our time in science speaking to our colleagues,
00:00:32.18 and a lot of us dread this.
00:00:35.05 Some of us don't prepare for it really well,
00:00:38.09 and even if you prepare a lot,
00:00:40.07 you might end up feeling really crummy about the job you did afterward.
00:00:44.06 This stuff is important.
00:00:47.14 There are a lot of good reasons for giving a really clear,
00:00:52.08 really effective, well-organized talk
00:00:55.24 in which you communicate your science to your colleagues.
00:01:00.14 It's one of the primary ways that we advertise our work to other people.
00:01:04.03 In some ways, sometimes I think about myself as the marketing department of my own laboratory
00:01:09.21 because I'm out on the road giving seminars and talking about the work
00:01:13.14 and spreading the word almost.
00:01:15.15 But even more importantly, I think it's a tremendous opportunity
00:01:19.15 to tell a story about science in your own words.
00:01:23.28 If you're talking about your own work for example,
00:01:25.19 you might be discussing a couple of different papers.
00:01:29.03 And we all know that people don't read as much as they used to,
00:01:31.27 so giving a seminar—a research seminar—
00:01:34.27 is this great opportunity to actually tell the story in the way that you see the work.
00:01:41.05 And that presents an opportunity to influence the field itself
00:01:45.14 —to actually shape the field in which you work.
00:01:48.25 It's a great chance to get feedback.
00:01:50.26 If you're at a stage in a project where you're not quite certain
00:01:55.00 of which direction the project is going to go,
00:01:57.25 having a chance to give a talk and then getting feedback from colleagues at other institutions
00:02:04.01 can be extraordinarily helpful in generating new ideas
00:02:08.21 or in teasing apart what the most important direction might be to pursue,
00:02:12.26 or in developing the collaborations that you actually need to go in a certain direction.
00:02:18.12 In a funny kind of way, giving a good talk lets you be popular.
00:02:22.03 I mean, who of us was popular in high school?
00:02:24.20 We were all the science geeks, right?
00:02:25.29 But, if you give a good scientific presentation,
00:02:29.04 it turns out that really helps you get invited to meetings, to conferences,
00:02:33.05 to all kinds of gatherings in our field
00:02:36.09 that enable us to increase our network of interactions within science.
00:02:41.19 And, giving a good job talk actually really has a big influence on whether you get the job.
00:02:47.17 I've been a member on a lot of search committees,
00:02:48.22 and I can tell you that some jobs are lost in the first two minutes of a job talk,
00:02:54.13 at which point it becomes clear that
00:02:56.18 despite the fact that this person has done extraordinary, beautiful research,
00:03:01.27 that he or she doesn't have the communication skills to flourish in a department like mine,
00:03:07.26 which is an undergraduate teaching department.
00:03:09.12 In contrast, other job talks that are lucid and well-organized and compelling and exciting,
00:03:16.14 not only because of the data, but because of the delivery style
00:03:20.12 can really just nail the job for that person.
00:03:22.20 That is the person we want.
00:03:24.03 So, job talks have a big influence on your future.
00:03:28.01 You might think, well, you know, I work in biotech.
00:03:30.06 This whole presentation stuff isn't going to matter nearly as much for me,
00:03:33.21 but actually it might matter more.
00:03:36.15 More and more in industry, there are fewer written reports,
00:03:39.16 and major decisions about the future of projects
00:03:42.20 —what kind of projects to take into clinical development—
00:03:46.28 are based on oral presentations and are evaluated by the people for whom you work.
00:03:52.10 So, for an industry environment, it's conceivable that
00:03:56.16 actually giving a good talk is even more important than academia.
00:04:00.08 So, how do you give a good talk?
00:04:02.08 Well, there are a lot of resources out there for knowing some of the basics
00:04:05.25 about how to use Powerpoint wisely,
00:04:07.25 how to structure a talk so that it's audience friendly,
00:04:10.15 how to actually create a story that is simple enough to follow
00:04:15.20 that contains the minimum data that it takes
00:04:17.21 to convince the audience that your story is credible,
00:04:21.19 and yet not so much that the audience is drowning in data.
00:04:24.23 So, take advantage of some of these resources that
00:04:27.16 help to teach you what to incude and how to present it.
00:04:31.18 And then, importantly, rehearse your talk in front of your colleagues, get their feedback
00:04:37.12 —not only about the data, but the way the slides are built,
00:04:40.23 and whether the flow of the talk is well organized.
00:04:43.19 If you're brave, and I encourage you to be brave,
00:04:46.00 have yourself video taped and get a sense of how you appear to the audience as a speaker.
00:04:51.06 Are you engaging? Do you appear passionate about your work?
00:04:55.18 It turns out that your ability to convey excitement about your work
00:04:59.21 has a huge influence on the impact that it will have on the audience.
00:05:05.08 There are a lot of resources out there, I hope you'll take advantage of them,
00:05:08.02 because giving a good talk is important.
