00:00:17.10 And I'm Anne Carpenter.
00:00:18.14 I lead the CellProfiler project.
00:00:20.05 We created the Scientific Community Imaging Forum
00:00:21.28 when we realized that biologists need an online resource
00:00:24.08 for biological image analysis questions.
00:00:26.26 We used to have separate question-and-answer forums
00:00:28.29 for our individual software projects,
00:00:30.25 but we merged them because often beginners
00:00:32.23 don't even know where to get started on their project,
00:00:34.05 and they don't know which software they should use.
00:00:36.09 Sometimes it just takes a few minutes
00:00:37.23 to get the right help to really affect the direction of a project.
00:00:40.09 It's really great, and important,
00:00:41.26 to ask for the help of experts
00:00:43.10 when you are starting off or when you're stuck with a problem
00:00:45.11 in bioimage analysis.
00:00:46.23 And it's equally important to actually
00:00:48.29 be able to have software solutions
00:00:51.00 to choose for the best solution for your problem.
00:00:53.29 The forum has really brought the bioimaging community together.
00:00:56.22 Now there's over 20 other software projects
00:00:58.28 and community organizations
00:01:00.10 that are using it as their main outreach.
00:01:02.14 These include software projects from the whole bioimaging workflow spectrum,
00:01:05.24 as well as scientific organizations,
00:01:07.12 such as NEUBIAS, the Network of European BioImage Analysts.
00:01:10.18 The forum now has more than
00:01:12.04 9,000 registered users and over 70,000 posts.
00:01:14.25 To get started, you can search existing posts
00:01:16.19 to see if someone's already proposed a solution.
00:01:18.24 Sometimes you can find pipelines or macros for software
00:01:21.06 that can be quickly adapted to your project.
00:01:23.28 If not, post your question.
00:01:25.19 If you have the question, someone else does too.
00:01:27.16 And there are many, many advantages.
00:01:29.16 This forces you to really think carefully about your problem.
00:01:33.02 Writing clear, well-defined questions
00:01:35.09 without bio-specific jargon
00:01:36.21 oftentimes helps you understand it
00:01:37.27 -- makes it clearer to you -- just by writing out the question.
00:01:39.25 If not, once you get the answer to your problem,
00:01:41.27 not only do you benefit but so do others.
00:01:43.29 You're helping other people,
00:01:45.25 and they can search and find this solution
00:01:47.26 in the different categories and different tools we have on the forum.
00:01:50.15 So, you don't need to share to your
00:01:52.27 specific goals or scoop yourself or your article.
00:01:54.25 You can just give minimal working examples,
00:01:57.06 and you'll be helping yourself and the community as a whole.
00:01:59.29 And you'll find other resources too on the forums,
00:02:02.01 such as announcements for scientific conferences
00:02:04.13 and training workshops,
00:02:05.18 where you can learn more about bioimage analysis,
00:02:07.01 and job openings, for when you fall in love with bioimaging
00:02:09.20 and want to do it full-time.
